Introduction

These interviews are aimed at students, educational researchers, academics and visitors to the Education Arena website who are interested in particular journals and would like to find out more.

Each interview provides information about the Editor(s) in question and details about the creation of their journal, its purpose and scope within the wider sphere of educational research. Each Editor is also asked to offer advice, hints and tips to prospective authors who may be hoping to submit papers to their journal.

This thirty-second interview is with Mike Waggoner, Editor of Religion & Education. Religion & Education is a journal of analysis and comment with the purpose of advancing public understanding and dialogue on issues at the intersections of religion and education. These issues emerge in various venues: public or private education at elementary, secondary, or higher education institutions; non-school or community organizations and settings; and formal or informal organizations or groups with religion or spirituality as an integral part of their work. This journal does not address the work of formal religious institutions including churches, synagogues, mosques, and temples. Rather, it focuses on the beliefs and values arising from all traditions as they come into contact with educational work in the public square.

More about Mike Waggoner

Michael D. Waggoner is Professor of Education at the University of Northern Iowa where he has chaired the Graduate Program in Postsecondary Education since 1989.  For thirteen years he served as Chair of the Department of Educational Leadership, Counseling, and Postsecondary Education.  His scholarly interests are in the areas of religion and spirituality in education.  He is in his 11th year serving as Editor of Religion & Education, a peer-reviewed journal, and is also Book Series Editor for Routledge Research in Religion and Education.  Dr. Waggoner was recently elected to Chair the American Educational Research Association’s Religion & Education Special Interest Group (2012-14).  His most recent book was published in 2011 by Routledge:  Sacred and Secular Tensions in Higher Education:  Connecting Parallel Universities.
